It is a busy year for cricket in England and Wales as we have the Ashes, the World Cups, and Disability Cricket’s International Tournament (the latter is around the Worcester area) along with all the usual domestic and recreation cricket. A vital part of these matches is scorers.
The ECB ACO is currently developing an Officiating Strategy for 2020-2024 and is looking at what scoring will look like in the future. As part of this process there will be some consultations with scorers so please watch out for this and/or send your views to Heather Vernon or any County Scorers Officer.
Support for Scorers
Scorers Officers
Support for scorers is provided by scorers officers. There are scorers officers in the ECB ACO with responsibilities for a county, region or national. The National Scorers Officer, and also the West Midlands Regional Scorers Officer is Heather Vernon. The Acting County Scorers Officer for Warwickshire is Sarah Norell. Sarah can advise on courses and other scoring matters. Please feel free to contact her through the form below to discuss any support required.
Facebook Group
Heather has set up a closed Facebook group called WeMS for scorers in the West Midlands Region. It is open to any scorers currently scoring in the West Midlands (Warwickshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire). It is a great way to get in touch with other scorers in the region, gain support after a difficult day scoring or before scoring a game, to ask for advice on any scoring problems including how to use strange scoreboard operating controls, or just to share scoring experiences. To join, follow this link: West Midlands Scorers on Facebook
Scorer Training in Warwickshire
In the ECB ACO, and locally in the WCACO, we are keen to encourage more people to get involved in scoring and can provide training and support to anyone interested. There is a clear pathway for scorers to learn how to score from the simple basics through to electronic scoring.
Usually training goes on during the winter as we’re all too busy scoring to run things during the summer! If you are interested in attending any courses, please get in touch on the form below so that we can plan accordingly. Registration for scorers training courses can be made via the ECB website. You are free to attend courses in any county. The courses usually on offer are listed below. Dates, times and places will be added later – get in touch via the form at the bottom of the page if you’d like us to notify you when the course dates are available.
Introduction to Scoring
There is an Introduction to Scoring course that can be run over an evening or half-day and is particularly good for anyone scoring occasionally or scoring, maybe as a parent or relative of a junior player. We can run this at local clubs, so if you are interested in having a course run at your club, please get in touch with the form below.
Electronic Scoring Module
The new Electronic Scoring Module covering scors using Play-Cricket Scorer PRO. It is intended for scorers who are new to Scorer PRO or those already using the software but who would like a refresher. Participants will need to bring a laptop with at least Windows 8 and pre-loaded with the Scorer PRO software, which can be downloaded from https://play-cricket.com/updates3. The course covers all the basic features and some of the more advanced elements of the software. There will be time to practice scoring a match, including how to deal with the events that happen infrequently or the more unusual situations scorers come across.
Linear Scoring
This is one of the required Modules for scorers interested in progressing towards Scorer’s Level 3 and aims to provide a clear understanding of Linear Scoring. It assumes that you are already a competent scorer so does not cover the basics of scoring but focuses on using a Linear Scoresheet both as the sole method of scoring and also in a simpler form as a back-up to electronic scoring. It is a half-day course.
Duckworth Lewis Stern Module
This is one of the required Modules for scorers interested in progressing towards Scorer’s Level 3 and aims to provide a clear understanding of the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern methodology. As more leagues are using DLS as part of their playing conditions this Module teaches the various ways of calculating DLS Par Scores and Targets using manual and electronic options. It assumes that you are already a competent scorer so does not cover the actual scoring notations but focuses solely on how and when to use DLS. It is a half-day course.
Scorer Certification
There are three levels of scorer certification. If you are an experienced scorer and a member of the ECB ACO, you do not need to start the Scorers Pathway at level 1, but can enter at an appropriate level. Please contact Sarah to discuss this.
To receive certification as a scorer at Level 1 or above you will need:
- to be a member of the ECB ACO
- to produce a portfolio of matches you have scored
- have a professional discussion with a development officer
You can book a level 1 discussion via the ECB website under courses. Other discussions can be arranged via Sarah.
